The Vail Breakaways, the dynamos of women's
ice hockey, have evolved from humble beginnings to the eight-time winners of
the state championships. First loosely organized in 1976, the team was
originally known as the "Vail Pucking Society" then the "Vail Snails" and
finally the "Vail Breakaways".

The Vail Snails, the
precursor to the Vail Breakaways, coached by Mike Hardy, had a roster
of women including Kate Lorch (Klein), Emily Graves, Pam Hardy, Ingrid
Giannetti, Judy Sibley, Sandy Smith, Laura Fawcett, Sally Darlington,
Deb Onderdonk and Linda Osterberg. |

Breakaways Trivia
Ten of the Breakaways' past coaches have had college or NHL playing
experience: Tee Fox, John Osterberg, Mike Hardy, Rob Fawcett, Dave Hymes, Darwin McCutcheon, Eric Nesterenko, Gary Defina, Hal Schmidt
and Jason Fletch.
In 1996, the Vail Breakaways became the first North American women's
ice hockey team to compete in China.
The Vail Breakaways have won the Colorado State Title eight times in
the last twelve years including three straight wins 1995-1997.
Kristena (Sibley) Wyatt, forward for the Vail Breakaways, is the
second of three generations of Sibley women playing hockey. Mom, Judy
Sibley, is a goalie for the Vail Warps and daughter, Tasha Sibley,
plays for the Vail U-12s.
Breakaways Alice Plain, Joni Coughlin and Yodi Borg were members of
the Colorado All-Stars women's hockey team that played against the
Chinese women's Olympic hockey team in Vail in January 2002.
